Nis is one of the oldest cities in the Balkans and with around 250.000 residents is the third largest in Serbia. It is located in southern Serbia, at the crossroads of the most important Balkan and European routes connecting Europe with the Middle East. Several Roman emperors were born in Nis or used it as a residence. It was birthplace of the Roman emperor Constantine the Great and the city of Nis still embodies the combination of exotic East and elegant West. The most important cultural and historical attractions in Nis are the Nis fortress-the best preserved Turkish fortress in th central Balkan, the Mediana – a large 4th century Roman estate, the Skull Tower (Cele Kula), the Monument to the Liberators of Nis – erected in 1937. in memory of the fight for the liberation of Nis, the Red Cross Camp- a Nazi concentration camp. Get ready for a wide variety of flavors, great barbecue and abundant food portions with a lot of meat and spices. Somethin do not misswhile you are there is thelocal “burek” (a kind of cheese pie), a speciality that has its own festival held every September in Nis. Important festival to mention concerning Nis is Jazz festival Nisville. The Guardian placed Nis Music Festival – Nisville among Europe’s Top 10 Jazz Festivals.
